Church Art. Manufactured articles used in churches including altars, candle sticks, confessional stalls, communion rails, and statues. Among the companies enjoying wide recognition for their craftsmanship were the Phillips Altar Factory located on Valeria Street and the DUBUQUE ALTAR MANUFACTURING COMPANY on the corner of 18th and Elm STREETS in Dubuque.
Furniture created by these companies was usually elaborately carved. Pews made the Dubuque Altar Company were shipped to St. Paul,, Minnesota and installed in its cathedral. The Phillips Altar Factory was closed in 1912 while the Dubuque Altar Company closed during the Great Depression.
