CHRISTMAN, Augustus. (Pennsylvania, Sept. 8, 1836--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 7, 1894). Christman's parents came to Iowa in 1837 and established a homestead at Sherrill's Mount. While still a boy, he was employed at Levi's dry goods store and clerked for Joshua Duncan. Following service in the CIVIL WAR, Christman returned to the dry-goods trade and in 1869 was joined by his brother. They dissolved their partnership a few years later, but then renewed it. (1)

The firm of J. AND A. CHRISTMAN AND COMPANY located at 672 Main Street was a dealer in dry goods and notions. One of the company's clerks was Joseph Frederick STAMPFER.
