CHRISTIAN A. VOELKER. A dry goods and clothing business, Christian A. Voelker was opened in a rented store by Christian Anton VOELKER on August 1, 1873 at 1330 Clay Street. He operated the company for seven years.

The business increased so rapidly that a new two-story brick building was constructed. The building contained two stores, with a frontage of 40 feet on Clay Street and running back on Thirteenth Street to the depth of 100 feet.

The company carried a retail stock of goods including dress goods, calicoes, ginghams, blankets, comforters, muslins, tickings, denims, hosiery, men's and boys' clothing, hats, caps, and "gents' furnishing goods."

The company employed four clerks and had an annual business of $20,000.
