CASS, Lewis
CASS, Lewis. (Exeter, NH, Oct. 9, 1782-Detroit, MI, June 17, 1866). Senator and territorial governor. Governor Cass visited the site of Dubuque's mines in July 1827, on an expedition to improve the reputation of the region. He traveled great distances to disprove a government report of 1815 that stated that the area of the Michigan Territory was worthless.
His glowing reports, along with those of geologist Henry SCHOOLCRAFT, did much to encourage settlement in the region of the Upper MISSISSIPPI RIVER.
