CARVER, D. D. W.
CARVER, D. D. W. (Delaware Co., NY, May 12, 1834--Dubuque, IA, Nov. 16,1909). Newspaper publisher. Coming to Dubuque in 1862 after being appointed postmaster by President Buchanan, Carver worked as a foreman at the Dubuque Herald before purchasing half-interest in the paper.
The firm of Ham and Carver made up of D.D.W. Carver and C.M. HAM took over complete ownership of the paper on January 13, 1865. The men owned the paper until September 9, 1899, when they sold their interests to the Herald Printing Company. Carver rejected repeated efforts to have him campaign for public office on the Democratic ticket.
