BURDS, Mark. (Dubuque, IA-- ). One of the outstanding participants in BOXING to come from Dubuque, Mark "Rockin' Red" Burds was the open runner-up in the Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves matches held in 1953 and 1954 and the Open Champion in the Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves in 1956.

In 1960, he was the Post Champion in Ft. Carson, Colorado. Burds represented Denver, Colorado in the 32nd annual Golden Gloves Finals at the Chicago Stadium. He was the runner-up in the Tournament of Champions and received the Barney Ross Sportsmanship Trophy.

In 1961, Burds was again the Open Champion at the Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves and the recipient of the Outstanding Boxer Award. In 1962, he was the open runner-up again in Cedar Rapids.

Burds amateur boxing career spanned twelve years. He was involved in an estimated eighty fights.
