BURDEN, George. (Devonshire, England, Sept. 27, 1814--Dubuque, IA, Apr. 27, 1889). Real estate developer and banker. Burden, father of [[BURDEN, George A.|George A. BURDEN]], came to Dubuque in 1857 and entered the real estate business with [[RICHARDS, Benjamin Billings|Benjamin Billings RICHARDS]] (in the firm of Taylor, Richards and Burden) before going into the business alone. For a time, Burden served as a director of [[FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE]]. He left banking in 1860 to concentrate full-time on real estate investments that he developed throughout the community.
