BURDEN, George. (Devonshire, England, Sept. 27, 1814--Dubuque, IA, Apr. 27, 1889). Burden, the father of George A. BURDEN, came to the United States in 1833 and settled in western New York for over twenty years while working in mercantile business.
He came west to Iowa in 1855 and settled in Dubuque. He entered the real estate business with Benjamin Billings RICHARDS (in the firm of Taylor, Richards and Burden). In 1856 they established a bank at Winona. In 1862, they retired from banking in Winona and returned to the land business.
For a time, Burden served as a director of FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE. He left banking in 1860 to concentrate full-time on real estate investments that he developed throughout the community.
