BREAST OF FRIENDS. In 1996 the breast cancer survivor dragon boat paddling movement began at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Don McKenzie, a sports medicine professor at the school, challenged the belief that breast cancer survivors should avoid rigorous upper-body exercise for fear of developing lymphoedema. McKenzie believed exercise would aid survivors' health.

The visit of a breast-cancer survivor team to Dubuque in 2002 led Bonnie Bell and Susie Freeze to bring others together to form the Dubuque breast cancer team for dragon boat racing.
