BERTSCH Robert M. (Dubuque, IA, Mar. 10, 1931--Dubuque, IA, July 23, 2009). The son of Leonard P. and Lucille M. (Traynor) Bertsch, Robert married the former Carol Nemmers on Sept. 3, 1955, at the CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY.

Robert graduated from LORAS ACADEMY, LORAS COLLEGE and Georgetown University Law School. While at Loras College, he played football and baseball. In 1953, Robert was named Scholar Athlete of The Year by the Loras Club of Chicago, and was a first-team all-conference selection as quarterback. He was inducted posthumously into the Loras Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 19, 2009.

Upon graduation from law school, Robert served with the Marines as an infantry platoon leader and staff legal officer from 1956 to 1958. Following his discharge from the military, he joined the Dubuque law firm of O'Connor, Thomas, McDermott & Wright (later O'Connor and Thomas, PC), and practiced with that firm until his retirement in 1996.
