BECKER, Paul
BECKER, Paul. (Cascade, IA--Cape Canaveral, FL, Feb. 17, 1977). In 1946 Becker took over the direction of the Dubuque weather office, one of the oldest in the nation. He remained in the position until heart trouble forced his retirement in 1974.
Becker's first forecasts, sent by mail from his downtown office in the Federal Building, caused him to remark that "weather generally arrived before the mail." With his leadership, the weather office was upgraded and transferred to the AIRPORT in 1951. Throughout his career, Becker was responsible for the continued introduction of sophisticated equipment and techniques used in monitoring and reporting weather conditions.
In addition to his duties at the weather station, Becker served as the secretary of the Dubuque County Conservation Board.
